Lessons Learned

We are gearing up for our 8th move in a couple weeks........yes 8th in five years. I was thinking of all the things I've learned from these moves and here's the short list.
1. Common sense doesn't apply to movers. This means they will pack your dirty dishes, pack that trash can full of trash, stuff your blouses into vases, pack your toilet brush(yuck), and throw your necklaces in the bottom of a box so they are sure to stay tangled forever......why....why? (So, be ready.)
2. Don't let them pack your "part box" but bring it to your next installation yourself. The part box is somewhat of a new thing with some companies. They think it's a great idea to put all the parts to every appliance/machine/piece of furniture into one box........so if they happen to lose that box you're sunk.
3. When changing your address, change it for each individual & not the entire family, or else you will receive your in-laws' mail and they will get none.
4. Label, Label, Label!!! From the beginning I've bagged individual curtain rod parts, hooks & screws and labeled them- it's served me well. Otherwise it might take a really long time to figure out what "that thing" goes to.
5. Bring a little piece of home with you, that way when you are camping out on your new home floor for 2 weeks wondering where in the world your stuff is, you have a little something that makes it feel like home. For us, we bring out fridge magnets & pics. It's the little things.

"Pin-What?"

"I said, Pinterest." I've mentioned Pinterest on the phone a couple different times and thats always the reaction I get.....and then I end up saying something unhelpful such as "It's like interest with a p in front of it".....and then I get even worse and say things such as "it's like you pin your favorite things online." Huh? What does that mean? Well, the main reason I love it (besides having all my ideas in one place & no longer cutting up magazines for recipes, travel, fashion, home inspirations, etc...) is that it is one of the best sources of DIY projects. If I haven't sold you yet, here are some of my favorite projects I've found via Pinterest (and you can click on the big "P" on my menu bar and look at my boards to get sources.....because yes, I'm feeling a bit lazy).

Dear Caleb,

You're Aunt Heather can't wait to meet you.
Yesterday was quite the baby day. My sister gave birth to my beautiful nephew (and the first grandchild on my family's side), and I did a prego photo shoot for my friend Christy and her husband Tony. We first met Christy and Tony here in Oklahoma four years ago and they have become very dear friends. Together we all moved to WA, the husbands deployed for a year, we welcomed the husbands home, then we all moved to Oklahoma again. It's hard to think of going somewhere without them, and I'm dreading it. Here are a couple photos I did for them before Tony's deployment. PS. I'm the first to admit that Im no expert at photography, but I'm learning!
These were from yesterday.....
We all ended the evening by going to the top of Mt. Scott and watching the sunset. Life is beautiful.

Blend Away

Secrets of a Stylist has been picked up for another season and promises to be better than ever, starting July 9th. One of the main reasons I love the show is that Emily does an incredible job of blending styles to the point where you don't even notice. Most of us cannot be pinned down to one design aesthetic, and Emily makes it ok. Although I appreciate different styles, the mix I always come back to is Moroccan meets mid-century. This has taken me a lot of time and mistakes to figure out. Through those mistakes I have found appreciating different aesthetics does not mean that you can live with them. Clutter and nick-nacks stress me out. Period. That's where I get the mid-century modern clean lines. The Moroccan (or global) comes in with textiles aged woods, and lanterns. Thank you Emily for making it ok. If you're visual like me, here's what I mean.
Ps. Completely unrelated, but have you guys seen Dual Survival? I'm normally not a sucker for survivor shows, but this one is hilarious. It's about a die-hard hippie and ex army guy who are together put in difficult situations and have to make their way out. The kicker and truly hilarious part is that the hippie is always barefoot (jungle, swamp, or desert), has two long braids and wears turquoise jewelry. Just seeing these two guys interact is so great.

A work in progress

Ok, remember this post with those beautiful etsy pillows? Well, with my leftover birthday money I ordered mine and here they are. I'm thinking about eventually adding some pop of orange (don't worry- solid not print). I kind of like this pillow from UO. I think I can get away with more color in my textiles since I'm usually dealing with white walls (& couches). I'm telling you though, decorating is all about layers, slowly adding one at a time.

Mixing Metallics

I feel like I just said a bad word. It's like denim on denim- you just don't do it. Oh that's right- we didn't, that is before this latest mixing-denims trend. So ya, you can also mix metallics (and this is not a trend). After all, who wants to make a lifetime commitment to decorating with gold or silver? I don't.....I can't. Well thank goodness we don't have to. There are a couple guidelines though when breaking the metallics rule. Mainly, you don't want to have silver everywhere in your house and then just one gold frame. This will end up looking like a careless afterthought rather than purposeful design. Look how beautiful it can be when you do it right: (check out the stairs in pic #4....wow).....
