2015- A new year, a new baby, and some new thoughts for the coming year

I'm here, I promise! This Christmas was especially good to us, we welcomed our second girl into the family- Charlie (Charlotte) Paige. Like most parents of one kid, it was difficult for me to imagine loving another child as much as Reese, but it is truly amazing how my heart expanded in just an instant. Perhaps even more precious is watching the love Reese has for her little sister….a two and a half year old trying to soothe her baby sister may be the cutest thing I've ever seen. We have been mostly in survival mode as far as sleep is concerned, but it's truly been the happiest time. I feel like I am slowly getting back into everyday life, but am determined to take it easy and to just enjoy this time as I figure out life with two little ones. As I remember from my last time with a newborn- it goes too fast to sweat the small things.

While I can't exactly say that I've spent the break thinking about the direction I want to take this here blog, it has been in the back of my mind for the past year. About a year and a half ago I received an email from an editor of a big magazine showing interest in sharing my home in print. Needless to say, I was ecstatic. We exchanged over fifty emails/pictures over the course of a year and a half and I was encouraged not to share too many pictures of my house on the blog or with any other sites. I do not mention that here to impress you, but rather to explain the lack of personal posts in regards to progress on the house. Though this possible magazine feature may still "be in the works" (after a year and a half, I'm having my doubts though), I've decided to just do my thing here regardless. I find this blog to be such a creative outlet, and that is more important to me than any possible "success". Last year I decided to blog less, and to do more quality posts….and I want to continue along that path. For me, that is the only way I can be the wife and mom I want to be, keep up with my responsibilities and other hobbies, AND keep up with this blog.  I also would like to talk more about things/issues that are important to me here, so that posts are not all decor and clothes (as much as I love them). Though I'm not the gifted writer I wish I was, a few thoughtful posts seems more true to who I am as a person. Lastly, I would like to turn my attention to (finally)starting an etsy shop this year. I have been running this idea over in my mind for a couple years now, and I feel this is the year to make the jump. So those are my thoughts on the future of RestlessOasis….now here is another one of my little Charlie:

Reese's big girl room reveal

The transition of Reese's room from nursery to toddler/little girl room was bound to take place since I would need the crib for baby girl #2, but I didn't expect to have to start making the change before her second birthday. When Reese started climbing out of her crib last May, we transitioned the crib to a toddler bed knowing it was a temporary fix. Fast forward a couple months, and I was excited to find this bed on craigslist for $20 and quickly transformed it into a look-alike Oeuf bed. Since then, our active girl has used nap time to knock over her bookcase, tear up her books, push the rocking chair upside down, pull the curtain rods out of the wall, and most recently chip the paint off the newly painted bed frame with anything hard she can find. So what you are seeing below, is Reese's room as I would like it to be 24/7, but it is most definitely not. For us, nap time means taking her bookcase out of the room with all the books and any hard objects. While I still can hear her jumping off the bench and bed (and a little voice counting before the big jump) during "nap time", at least I feel that I've done everything to keep her from getting hurt (and everything ruined). I'm hoping the room as it is below is in our near future though:)….

Below you can see the DIY pom-pom garland I made a while back, and more recently my mom turned R's old crib sheet into a pillow for her bed because I loved the fabric so much.
Below you can see the DIY barn wood shelf I made last year….

Ps. Hope you enjoy Halloween tomorrow…this is R's first year of tricker treating, and I'm excited to watch her experience it. If you're running low on costume ideas, here are R's costumes the past couple years.

Life Lately (according to my phone)

Another stop at my favorite market in Indy...
Playing tour guide for one of my dearest friends- Reese loved the extra attention (and extra pair of arms):
Indianapolis in the Fall
A short trip to Chicago with my friend and exploring new sites….such as the stunning Bahai House of Worship
Lunch at Plein Air Cafe (still dreaming about that vanilla steamed milk)
Finally got to see Harper Memorial Library at University of Chicago, a must see in my book
Connor and I set out to find Indiana's prettiest Fall colors, and I think we found them
Remnants from a fun night with friends (R's painted pumpkin and homemade peppermint marshmallows)

DIY Clothing Rack

We just got in from a fun trip to Michigan, and as I spend the day tackling the laundry and unpacking, I thought I would share one of the many projects we have been up to. Since the nursery will be doubling as a guest room, there is a lack of storage/closet space. Originally, I had plans of making a standing clothing rack that could be used by guests as well as for baby clothes. It soon become clear, however, that there wasn't sufficient space in this multi purpose room. Using this image as inspiration, I came up with my own simple DIY clothing rack for baby girl to hang her pretty clothes (more practical things will be stored elsewhere).
~
There are only a few items needed for this DIY: two wooden brackets, string (it worked for light weight baby clothes, but probably something more heavy duty if you're hanging heavier items), and a wooden dowel. Best part? The total cost was a grand $8.
We found these wooden brackets at Lowes.  They were fine, but I wasn't a huge fan of the curves.
Connor simply cut the curvy part off to give me a cleaner look and I put on a quick coat of poly. We then drilled a hole through the tip and with a needle put the string through tying a not at the top.
The last step was to wrap the wooden dowel with the hanging string at the desired height. That's it! So simple, and I love the results. You're getting a little sneak peak into the nursery here…..more coming I promise!

Nursery update

A lot of progress has been made on the nursery recently thanks to my mom who was in town last week. I thought I would share a sneak peak into the inspiration board I created as I work on the finishing touches.
A bit about the room- I wanted to do something completely different than what I did in Reese's nursery. While Reese's nursery (and now bedroom) has a lot of pastels and soft neutrals, I wanted to do a more bohemian vibe in this next baby's room using colors pulled from the rug I brought up from the office. Though a lot of these pieces didn't make it in to the room (and some new ones were added), I always find an inspiration board helpful to move me in the right direction. I'm really excited with how the room is turning out and can't wait to share it with you guys!

Less is more- honest thoughts for a Friday

This Friday finds me thoughtful and inspired.  Earlier this week, I read Erin's articulate piece on minimalism.  It got me thinking about my own life and how over the years I have gradually become more and more of the "less is more" mindset.  In truth, I have the Army to thank for a lot of that (and those seven out of state moves in eight years)…..there's something about packing and unpacking repeatedly that makes you want to carry less around.  I also think a lot of it has to do with how I'm made- bottom line: clutter stresses me out.  I've always found that simple spaces make me feel peaceful and relaxed.  In reality, there's still progress to be made….areas in need of growth.  In a consumerist culture (and the blogosphere often isn't any help)  it's difficult to navigate between "need" and "want".
~
I'm not sure if I have talked about it much here, but when we bought our house our realtor mentioned that in our neighborhood, any remodeling we put into the house (such as floors/kitchen/bathroom) we would probably not make up in profit.  While I always imagined us buying our first house and completely making it our own by remodeling, the reality has been that since we don't plan on being in this house for more than a few years (and it's not our dream house), it really doesn't make sense to make expensive changes if there's no end profit.  My attitude (though it needed help at first) this whole time has been to make the best with what we have without any real structural changes.  It's been a challenge to make our newer home unique without remodeling, but it in a really good way.  I've found myself challenged creatively more than I ever have….which brings me to my next point- the nursery.

(When our kitchen nook was picked as one of the finalists in the Considered Design Awards, I laughed to myself when the judge mentioned the floor adding to the space.  Little did he know it has been a point of contention for me, being linoleum rather than real tile.
Being pregnant with our second means we have all the necessities, what a blessing! However, as a second born myself, I knew right away that I still wanted to make a special place for this next girl. I've heard all the jokes about taking less pictures of your pregnancy the second time around and less pictures of the baby, and I felt determined to make as much a big deal of this little girl as I made of Reese. After all, most of her clothes and toys will have been her older sister's, so a special room prepared for her seems like a nice way to welcome her into the world without being excessive.  I started right away with a mood board, and the more I looked at it the more I realized how expensive it was becoming.  Not only that, but I was realizing that things we already owned I was going to need to replace just to work in that room….and then of course she and Reese would probably be sharing a room in a couple years, so all of those things would possibly be of no use in a while.  The more I thought of it, the more it didn't resonate with me. So the nursery is my next challenge to myself- to make it special and unique using mostly things from other parts of our house (with a couple extra smaller items).
Here is the start- I pulled the rug from the office and the Fiddle Leaf just wants to be in this room (it was on the verge of death in our living room).

Scandinavian Boy Nursery Inspiration

So, I guess I should share the reason behind my inconsistent posting this Summer.  While I definitely have been enjoying the beautiful weather and spending time with my family, that's not the sole reason for my absence here.  I'm pregnant with a baby girl!  We are beyond excited.  Though I have no real complaints as far as the pregnancy is concerned, I will note that nothing seems to sap my creativity more than exhaustion and nausea (only the first few months this time, thank goodness).
The funny thing is, though I actually thought it was a girl all along (and secretly hoped for one), I found myself being drawn to baby boy names and nursery things.  Ever since our Norway trip (seen here and here), I loved the idea of a Scandinavian nursery as a nod towards Connor's heritage.  So since we are not having a boy, I thought I would share my inspiration board with you:

When designing a room, I usually start with a pattern that I love…….whether it be fabric, an art piece, a rug, curtains, or wallpaper.  I find it's easier to build a cohesive room that way, and mixing patterns isn't as tricky when you start with the ones that you love.  In this case, I fell in love with the Robert Allen folkland fabric, and probably would have used it to make a crib sheet.  Not seen in this mood board, is the crib and other furniture we already have…..I'm still unsure how I want to rearrange our furniture in the house between the two girls.  More on that later!

Remodelista's Considered Design Awards 2014

You guys!  I had the biggest surprise this afternoon when I found out I was one of the five finalists (in my category) of Remodelista's Considered Design Awards.  Obviously, I have been a huge fan of Remodelista for some time now which definitely adds to the excitement.  With over 1,000 applicants in the US/CA/UK,  guest judges chose the finalists, and now it is up to readers to vote for the winners.  You can vote every day until August 8th, and I am in the "amateur living/dining space" category.  The dining nook is the space being voted on…..thanks guys- you're the best!

Office Shelves get a face lift

Hey there!  I'm still here, I promise:), just enjoying this Summer weather with my family…..maybe too much.  Today I'm excited to share with you a corner of our office that you haven't seen yet…..and for good reason.  Up until now, it has been less than noteworthy.  A few months ago, we put up some simple shelves with brackets from Lowe's and wood I stained, because we desperately needed some organization since Connor works from home a decent amount.  It didn't need to be pretty, just to serve a purpose.  I had resigned myself to being ok with the shelves not being my first choice because we just needed some practical organization.  A couple months went by, and I was still not pleased with them.  They looked too cold and industrial next to the lockers, and I felt there had to be a cheap solution.  Then one day I saw some gorgeous brass brackets from Anthropologie and fell in love.  Knowing Connor would appreciate not spending a lot of money on something as simple as brackets (that wasn't even in a main area of our house), I opted to spray painting the brackets.  I couldn't be more pleased with the end result, and while it helps that I got around to actually styling the shelves (ha), the gold brings a lot of warmth to this corner of the office.
Also, yesterday I was a guest over on the SiebFam blog, thanks for having me Alyssa!

A Second Birthday

If you follow me on instagram, you'll know Reese turned two over the weekend, and if you know me at all, you know I love any chance to celebrate.  It's not only a creative outlet for me, but it honestly brings me so much joy seeing people I care about enjoying themselves.  Instead of doing a party, we opted for doing a picnic with her best friend and her family.  Originally, I thought it would be a great idea to do a picnic at the Indianapolis zoo gardens followed by a visit to the butterfly house.  After a recent zoo visit, it became clear that what would would really make this two your old happy would be to run around with as little boundaries as possible with her best bud.  So we ended up having the picnic at the gardens near the Indianapolis Museum of Art (where there was more room for them to run around).   I made them butterfly wings, little crowns, handed them butterfly nets, and then we made a teepee (her birthday gift) just in case they got antsy.  When planning things like this, you never know what you're going to get…..the weather could be horrible, not to mention the mood of your toddler!  I was fully prepared to put a lot of effort into it, but have nothing work out……thankfully it was quite the opposite.  The weather was perfect, the girls ran around with their butterfly nets thoroughly enjoying themselves, and the only "glitch" was that the butterfly wings I made for the girls were not a hit.  Oh well, if that's the only complaint, I'll call it a success!

These two girls have the sweetest friendship, it is the most adorable thing to watch them together and makes my mom heart happy.

$10 DIY modern "brass" lighting tutorial

As promised, today I'm sharing with you just how I made our dining room lighting. Maybe you've wondered how I bought those brass parts for so cheap? Or maybe you noticed the word brass in quotations and had a sneaking suspicion that they are not brass parts…….if that was your guess then you are correct. As much as I would love it to be real brass, we all know that if it was, the lighting would cost way over ten dollars. So here is my secret ingredient…..STRAWS. Yes, the lighting is actually made of straws. I was pleased that at two different points, friends who came to the house and saw the lighting in the works assumed it was made of brass. I was secretly worried that it would look like straws, but I think I can safely say that I pulled it off.

So really, there are only 4 items you need for this DIY:
-straws (without the bendable portion).  I used black and there are bits of black that come through where I missed with the spray paint, and I felt like it helped with the overall "brass metal" look as opposed to being perfectly gold.
-gold spray paint
-string and needle
-a pendant light kit (I used this one, it got horrible reviews but it worked for me.)

*I already had the straws, gold spray paint, and string on hand….then with a coupon the light kit was only $10….win, win.

First, you want to pull the string through three straws in a row.  Then cut the string and create a triangle.
From there, I simply added triangles to create the shape I wanted….usually this was two straws at a time.

After hanging the black pendant light fixture, I hung up the brass sculpture part around it using wire at the top.  I found that I was better able to see where more triangles were needed when it was hanging.  I was also able to see where I wanted to connect the triangles when it was hanging.

Lastly, trim any string from the knots that you made, and then go back and paint over any exposed knots with gold paint and a paint brush.

DIY Modern "Brass" lighting for $10 and a dining room reveal

By now, this is hardly a reveal.  You have caught glimpses of the process of the transformation of our dining room over this past year (here and here), but not the entire room.  Well, here it is!  I secretly hate "reveals" because the word seems to connotate that the room is exactly the way you want it, finished, or perfect.  I don't know if I have ever felt that way about a room.  Don't get me wrong, I'm very pleased with the turnout…..I see this room as my very best effort with the budget we agreed upon. The table and bench were DIY thanks to Red, the bar cart and Bentwood chairs were cheap craigslist finds, and the head chairs were our splurge.  After the purchase of the head chairs, we agreed that we were done spending money on house things for a while (aside from Christmas and birthday money), so I sort of decided that I had to be content with the ugly standard-new-house-lighting we had from when we first moved into our house.  There are worse things.  Then one night when I was having trouble sleeping, I made up my mind that I could come up with a cheap alternative that would neither cost us much in terms of money or design….my favorite type of challenge.  Here I give you my $10 lighting….I will share the tutorial with you next week.

And just for fun, here is a picture of the dining room when we first bought the house (our realtor's picture and previous owner's furniture).
